Eat Honey! | Part 2

(Proverbs 25:27 ESV) It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.

Yesterday we talked about how good honey is to the taste. The writer compared the eating of honey to the getting of wisdom. Both are beneficial and very pleasing. Today, the writer of Proverbs takes a different angle. He says it is NOT good to eat much honey.

So, which is it? Is it good to eat honey? Or, is it NOT good to eat honey? The answer is… BOTH. In the first instance, the writer is encouraging the believer to obtain and utilize wisdom. The implication is that one can never have too much wisdom. Operating with godly wisdom brings about wonderful blessings which produce joy to the soul. Godly wisdom produces hope for the future that God has planned for us.

As we look at the Scripture for today, we see that the statement about not eating too much honey is connected with the warning not to seek one’s own glory. In other words, it is possible to take something good and misuse it in a selfish manner. There is nothing wrong with being confident. After all, we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. But, we must balance our confidence with godly humility.

If we only concern ourselves with the things that bring personal pleasure, we will miss opportunities to edify others in our circle of influence. We have to live with an awareness of others so we can determine whether they need a bite of the honey more than we do. That’s one of the great joys of being part of a local body of Believers. God wants us to be distributors of honey to those who are in need of a sweet treat!

So, grab a big bite of honey and let it bring joy to your soul! But, also be ready and willing to share that sweetness with those God brings into your life.

PRAYER: Father, thank you for providing such wonderful blessings for me to partake of. Help me today to be willing to share those blessings with others as well. There’s plenty of honey for all. Amen.
